On this week's Planet Japan, Paul stands in for Doug who is on vacation, and Amy is back full time. There's a lot of mooing going on in this show as Amy and Paul do their own thing and veer considerably from the usual format.
The show starts off with Paul and Amy talking about our time in Hokkaido. We talk about the economy there, including Niseko, where we spent most of our time, and also about another town called Yubari, which is in rehab. Find out why Nagano, the site of the 1998 winter Olympics, is also in trouble.
One way some cities in Japan are staying afloat is by selling naming rights to stadiums and sports facilities. We share some of our own ideas on how to get Hokkaido's economy back on track.
Believe it or not, India and China now have more billionaires than Japan.
Cow Tales is back this week and here we talk about how some Bison are "getting lucky" in Colorado.
We also introduce a new segment to the show called Animal Tales. Our first story is about how a church in Tennessee is mourning the death of a turkey.
We introduce "What the Heck is That?" a column in the Japan Times. This week's column is a question by a Planet Japan listener inquiring about golden poop she sees in Japan. Alice Gordenker explains.
That's it for this week! Paul and I will be back next week for another episode and Doug will be back full time after that. Thanks for listening to Planet Japan. Moooooooooo!
